A room will follow you anywhere if you're actually present in it. That's the only trick, and it's not a trick.

Communications is the degree and the job

I studied Communications with a focus on Leadership and Personal Development, and I'm nearly through the degree. More importantly I use it every week. I've been a keynote speaker and workshop lead, and sat on a panel with other speakers and leaders later the same day. I've taught Fundamentals of Flow three times and run fire safety courses that people actually remember.

What I've learned about a room is simple. People can tell when you're performing at them and when you're with them. Fire taught me to hold a crowd. Tea taught me to hold a silence. The mic is where those meet.

Teaching, training, community

Teaching is my favorite thing I do. Not because I like the sound of my voice — because I remember exactly what confused me at every stage of every craft, and I can hand someone the map. Beginners leave with a clear path. Experienced people leave with holes filled they didn't know they had.

Community is the same work at a different scale. Flow jams, tea circles, a backyard where tea opens and fire closes. The first circle is forming. If you want in, say so.

Where the voice shows up
